Freelance Work: Your money or your life?

That’s right, I am trying to find freelance work.

I have been working as a copywriter off and on for the last year. I have held a number of jobs since college, mostly on a career track and working in the non-profit world. However, one of the downsides to working in Los Angeles is the cost of the commute.

I once read a book called “Your money or your life” by Vicki Robin. This book really transformed the way I think about work and how I conduct myself. I have never been the type to retire early, but the idea of spending all of my “life energy” in exchange for money or things really stuck with me. I was working 60 hour work weeks at that point, and was driving a round trip commute of one and a half to two hours.

I first examined the costs associated with my job: eating out at lunch everyday, the cost of commuting, the lost time (where I could be working another job or enjoying life), the cost of clothing, etc.

For me, the costs were very high at this job. As my first job out of college, I hadn’t pushed for the higher salary I had wanted. So, when I reflected on the costs associated with the job compared with my salary and benefits, I was making maybe $6 an hour. It was eye-opening. I couldn’t believe how much my job was costing me.

What would you do? Have you ever considered this question. How much does your job cost you? Would you have walked away?

Ultimately, I moved on to another position. However, with the birth of my son I have been re-evaluating my life once more and wondering what to do with myself.

I recently decided to try digging deeper into freelance copy-writing work. I spent yesterday sending out about 25 applications to full-time positions as a copy-writer and 20 applications for freelance work.

Within 24 hours, I have 3 different projects lined up! They range in pay, and one may be a bit too low for my tastes, but it’s a great start.

I have a baseline established for my salary and time, but I am excited to being on my way to creating a career for myself that utilizes my skills and passion for writing.

So if you are looking for a staff writer or need some help with copy-writing contact me. And if you are looking to take the plunge and start your own business good luck!!!
